Do you want to stay healthy in the winter? Here are five easy tips

By | October 19, 2021

Staying healthy during the winter seems to be counter-intuitive. With long, dark mornings, lots of heavy food at Christmas and New Year’s celebrations, it can seem like winter is actively working against our fitness routines. However, it is just as important to keep up your workouts in the colder months as it is the rest of the year. Here are five easy tips that can help you stay fit and healthy all winter:

In the winter, we stay indoors more. You’re more tempted to stay in and put on the TV or the computer rather than head outside for some fresh air. It’s also colder outside, so it’s easier to make excuses to stay inside.

But winter doesn’t have to stop you from staying fit and healthy. Here are our five fitness winter tips to keep you active and healthy throughout the cold season.

 1. Make it fun.

Exercising in winter doesn’t have to be a chore. Find something that you enjoy and make it a winter routine. Maybe it’s the outdoor winter sports that you love, or maybe it’s something like playing tennis, basketball or volleyball. Try something new and you might find a new winter hobby.

2. Dress for it.

It’s not always easy to get motivated to work out when it’s cold outside, so dress for it. Wear layers and combine thermal tops, tights and leggings with cool-weather jackets and bottoms. You’ll stay warmer and more comfortable.

3. Plan ahead.

If you really can’t face the cold outside, try exercising indoors. Try a treadmill, cross trainer or stationary bike.

4. Stay hydrated.

Cold weather means we’re more inclined to drink warm drinks and less water. Make sure you drink plenty of water to keep your body hydrated.

5. Take the stairs.

Rather than take the elevator, take the stairs in winter. You’ll improve your cardiovascular health and burn a few extra calories.
